It is calculated that some 12 million people in the world are affected by ALZHEIMER’s DISEASE, 400,000 PATIENTS in the United Kingdom and ten times more in the United States. The growth of this disease will be spectacular in the XXI Century.
It is foreseen that with double the world population over 65 years of age, there will also be double the patients suffering from this disease.
The neurons most affected by ALZHEIMER are those which depend on the neurotransmitter ACETYLCHOLINE, which combines with two different types of receptors:
- Nicotinic acid.
- Muscarinic acid.
The apolipoprotein E-EA (APOE-EA) is a risk factor in ALZHEIMER’s Disease, but it is not sufficient for the disease to develop. Via a CRP test, Virus of the Herpes simplex type I (HSV1) in latent form in the brains of aged people have been detected.
The combination of the HSV1 virus in the brain and the expansion of the apolipoprotein E-EA, is a high risk factor for the development of ALZHEIMER’s Disease, whilst each factor individually does not increase such a risk (Ruth F. Itzhaki).
